Design CNC Machined Parts Considerations
01.
The Importance of Inside Diameter in CNC Machining
A larger internal radius reduces machining time in CNC processes. It’s recommended to maintain a radius greater than 1/3 of the depth of machining, or use an as large internal radius as possible. Consistent radii on all internal edges allows for tool uniformity.
02.
Tips for Optimal Cavity and Groove Design
To ensure efficient manufacturing, limit cavity and groove depth to 4 times the tool diameter or feature width. Holes should be a minimum of 1mm diameter and designed to standard sizes for fast and precise machining with a standard drill. Non-standard holes increase machining costs when an end mill is required.
03.
Avoid thin walls
Thin walls can increase vibrations during CNC machining. Minimum thickness for metal parts: 0.5-0.8 mm. Minimum thickness for plastic parts: 1.0-1.5 mm. Increase wall thickness to avoid vibrations in taller features. Careful consideration of wall thickness is crucial for optimal machining results.
04.
Avoid small or raised text
For efficient and effective text marking in CNC machining, opt for electrochemical etching or laser marking. When cutting text, use recessed rather than raised text whenever possible. Keep text simple, large, and with a font depth of no more than 0.3mm.
05.
Stick to the standards for threads
Adhere to standard sizes and lengths when creating threads. Add an extra length of half the hole diameter when tapping blind holes. Use threaded coils or brass nuts for longer service life, especially in soft materials. These guidelines improve thread performance and reliability.

CNC Machining Services Guide - Frequently Asked Questions
1.What is CNC machining service?
CNC machining is a manufacturing process that uses computer-controlled machines to produce precise and complex parts from raw materials such as metals, plastics, and woods. The process involves designing a 3D model of the part, which is then translated into machine code and used to control the cutting tools of the CNC machine. This results in a highly accurate and repeatable process that can produce parts with tight tolerances and intricate geometries. CNC machining services are commonly used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and medical device manufacturing. Key advantages of CNC machining include fast production times, high precision, and the ability to produce complex shapes with ease.
2. What are the advantages of CNC machining services?
Precision: CNC machines are highly accurate, capable of producing parts with tolerances as small as a few microns. This level of precision is essential for applications that require exacting specifications.
Automation: CNC machines are computer-controlled, which means they can operate continuously without the need for constant manual intervention. This results in faster production times and higher output rates.
Versatility: CNC machines can produce a wide variety of parts, from simple to highly complex shapes, using a range of materials such as metals, plastics, and composites.
Efficiency: CNC machines are highly efficient, with the ability to produce parts quickly and with minimal waste. This makes them a cost-effective solution for many manufacturing applications.
Consistency: Because CNC machines are computer-controlled, they can produce identical parts with consistent quality and accuracy, which is critical for large-scale manufacturing operations.
3. What are the Disadvantages of CNC Machining?
- High initial cost: CNC machines can be expensive to purchase and install, making it difficult for small businesses or individuals to invest in this technology.
- Skilled operator requirements: CNC machines require skilled operators who are proficient in programming and operating the equipment. This can increase production costs, especially if there is a lack of skilled labor.
- Limited flexibility: While CNC machines are great for producing large numbers of identical parts, they may not be the best choice for producing one-off or custom parts due to the high set-up time and cost.
Despite these disadvantages, CNC machining is still a popular manufacturing process, and GPMFG’s 20 years of experience in high-precision manufacturing and its large production plant allow you to overlook these disadvantages to achieve accuracy, speed and ease of production of complex parts.
4. What kind of CNC machining services do you offer?
Our CNC machining services include milling, turning, drilling, threading, tapping, electrical discharge machining (EDM), EDM wire cutting, custom surface finishing, prototype machining, small lot or one-off part machine runs, modification of existing parts, material procurement assistance, limited material warehousing and part scheduling. Whether you need a single prototype or 10,000 pieces, we offer fast turnaround times and can deliver custom metal and plastic parts in as little as 7 days. From design to production, we work closely with our customers to ensure that your exact specifications are met, providing quality parts that meet your needs.
5. What is your CNC machining capability?
At our CNC machining center, we pride ourselves on our extensive capabilities and commitment to quality. With a team of over 80 highly skilled employees and 43 state-of-the-art CNC machines, we are capable of handling a wide range of machining projects with precision and speed. Our facility operates 24/7 to ensure fast turnaround times, and we have the capacity to produce over 100,000 machined parts each month for our clients.
6. What is the typical cost of a CNC machined part?
At our CNC machining company, we provide personalized quoting support for every project. We understand that different machining processes have varying costs and can impact the final price of your part. CNC lathes are typically 15% less expensive to machine than standard 3-axis CNC milling for similar parts.
On the other hand, 5-axis machining can be more costly, with continuous 5-axis CNC milling often costing over 20% more than a scaled 5-axis machine, also known as 3+2 milling. Additionally, 5-axis machining can cost double the price of standard 3-axis milling.
To reduce costs, we recommend larger production runs to spread the machine setup costs across more parts, resulting in more cost-effective CNC machined parts.
7. What are the maximum size ranges of your machine travel?
Maximum Dimensions (3-axis milling): 1800 x 1000 x 500 mm / 70.9 x 39.4 x 19.7 in
Maximum Dimensions (5-axis milling): 1000 x 900 x 600 mm /39.4 x 35.4 x 23.6 in, Worktable Diameter Φ400 mm.
8. How do you ensure the quality of my parts?
We understand the importance of quality assurance, especially when it comes to international orders. That’s why we’re proud to be an ISO-9001-certified factory, ensuring that our manufacturing processes meet the highest quality standards.
Our team of skilled QC/QA staff is equipped with dedicated inspection equipment and can provide detailed 2D reports, CMM reports, and 3D scan reports to guarantee the quality of your parts. We adhere to a strict MIL-STD-105E-based statistical sampling plan, which ensures that 100% of all dimensional tolerances, geometric tolerances, and print notes are documented with zero rejects.
You can trust that all dimensional inspection reports will be shipped with your parts, so you can rest assured that your order meets your specifications.
